Mustangs Drop Two in State Tourney
The Hidden Valley Mustangs had a tough trip to the boys 4A State Championship Playoffs dropping two straight games.

The Mustangs battled in their first game, Thursday’s late game, losing in overtime to 10th ranked Estacada 61to 55. Again, Cooper Gagnon paced the Mustangs ripping the nets for 17 points while Senior post Mauricio Mendez hit for 15 and Evan Neufeld added 10.

After dropping an intense late game Thursday, the Mustangs found themselves back on the court Friday morning at 10:45 facing the 3rd ranked Molalla Indians who went on the warpath and handed Hidden Valley a 75 to 53 loss.

Cooper Gagnon and Mauricio Mendez each hit for 13 points in the final game. The Mustangs finish the year with a 17 win, 10 loss record.

Cavers Ousted from Playoffs by Lakers
Millie Lathen scored 20 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Cavers lost their home playoff game to Lake Oswego 45 to 35 last night at Heater Newman gym. Grants Pass finished the season with a 14 and 11 record.

The Ladys of South Medford led the way for the Southwest Conference with a home win over Newberg 61 to 26. The 4th ranked Panthers advance to face Mountainside, a 49 to 29 winner over Clackamas, on Saturday in Medford. Sheldon’s Lady Irish narrowly escaped with a home win by 3 points over McMinnville 35 5o 32 to next face Sherwood. Roseburg’s Indians lost to Southridge 76 to 30 to end their season.

Playoff Oppenents Announced for both Cavemen & Cavers
The Grants Pass Boys and Girls basketball teams playoff opponents have been named. The Cavemen will go on the road to face the Sherwood Bowmen Tuesday night with the tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Bowmen are ranked fifth in the state and won the Pacific Conference with a 12 and 0 mark and are 21 and 4 overall. The Cavemen finished tied for third in conference with an 8 and 4 mark in conference play and going 11 and 11 overall.

The Lady Cavers, ranked 16th in the state, earned a home playoff game and will host the Lakers of Lake Oswego Wednesday night at Heater-Newman gym at a time yet to be determined.

The Cavers finished 2nd in the Southwest Conference with a 9 and 3 record and were 14 and 10 overall. The Lakers were 17th in state and fourth in the Three Rivers league finishing 6 and 6 in league play while posting a 13 and 11 mark overall.

The OSAA announced the pairings for the 6A boys state championship playoffs late Friday night and the Grants Pass Cavemen are ranked 28th in the state and will travel this Tuesday to Sherwood to face the Bowmen in the first round. The young Cavemen tied for 4th place in the Southwest Conference with an 8 an 4 league record while finishing the regular season at .500 with an 11 and 11 mark. The Bowmen, ranked 5th in the state, represent a challenge for Grants Pass. Sherwood won the Pacific Conference going undefeated against conference foes and posting a 21 and 4 overall mark and carry 10 seniors on their roster. No time has yet been announced for the game, but it will be carried live on KAJO courtesy of the Insurance Lounge. The Lady Cavers await their post season match up that will likely be announced late Saturday afternoon. Currently, if the Cavers maintain their currently 16th place ranking, they would be in place for a home game Wednesday. That game, again courtesy of the Insurance Lounge, will be broadcast on KAJO.

Cavers & Cavemen Travel to Willamette in Season Finale
The Grants Pass High School basketball teams complete their regular season tonight when both teams, Cavers and Cavemen, travel to Willamette to face the Wolverines. The Cavers tip off at six in 2nd place in conference and ranked 16th in the state. The Wolverines are sixth in conference and ranked 40th. The Cavers are in line for a home play off game March 4th if they can defend that 16th ranking.

The Cavemen tip off at 7:30 and are tied with South Eugene for third in conference with a 7 and 4 record and are ranked 27th in the state, which earns a road game in the first round of the playoffs on March 3rd. The Willamette boys are also 6th in conference and both their boys and girls teams are well outside of any playoff consideration so this is their season finale.

Other conference action has North Medford at Sheldon and South Eugene at Roseburg. There is one other local team in action tonight, Hidden Valley hosting Henley. The girls schedules mirrors the boys.

Varsity Double Header at Heater-Newman Tips at 6:00
Tuesday night at Heater Newman gym local fans have a rare entertainment opportunity to enjoy a basketball double header, an award-winning band and the Grants Pass rally squad that just finished second in state plus its Senior night. The Cavemen, winners of six out of their last seven games, start things by tipping off against the North Medford Black Tornado at six. The Cavemen are 6 and 4 in conference a half game out of 3rd place in conference while the Tornado are 3 and 6. The Cavemen’s power ranking has climbed from 38th to 27th in the state and are qualified for a post-season berth.
The Lady Cavers are slated to tip off at 7:30 also against the Black Tornado. The Cavers are 2nd in conference, playoff bound, and winners of six of their last eight games. The Tornado are 3 and 6 and are fifth in conference.

Cavemen Hoar Irish & Valley School BB Schedules
The Grants Pass Cavemen return to the friendly confines of Heater-Newman gym Friday night to host the Sheldon Irish. The Cavemen with a 3 and 9 record are looking for their first conference victory. The Irish come into the game with 9 and five record overall and one and oh in conference, a 12 point victory over South Medford a week ago. Tip off is slated for 7:30 following the Lady Cavers contest with Sheldon. The boys game will be broadcast on KAJO courtesy of the Insurance Lounge.

The Cavers are 1 and 1 in conference, tied for 3rd and 6 and 8 overall while Sheldon is 0 and 1 in conference and 11 and 2 overall and are tied for 5th in the SWC.
